For the past decade, photographer Peter Ellenby has captured the bands and musicians that have emerged as avatars of the vibrant indie rock scene. An impromptu shooter with a fan’s eye, Ellenby employs the same sort of freewheeling, often chaotic techniques—using everything from plastic toy cameras to fish-eye lenses—as the musicians themselves. The result is a body of work that reveals the explosive energy of live performances and epitomizes the street ethic that these bands work and live by.
Once the sole province of college radio and small clubs, indie rock has exploded from the underground to become a major worldwide phenomenon, with many acts going on to multi-million-dollar label deals and sold-out arena tours. But such radical evolution has not blunted its edge, nor has it dampened Ellenby’s passion for his subject: a passion that has lead him to produce portraits as personal and open as the music itself, and live shots so visceral you practically tremble from the volume.
Hundreds of pictures combine to create a document of a vital international music

a 21-track CD featuring music by Preston School of Industry, Grandaddy, Death
Cab for Cutie, Film School, American Music Club, Rogue Wave, The Court &
Spark, Beulah, The Wedding Present, Kingdom First, and many of the other bands
from this groundbreaking movement.
