bio & clients

I have a pretty unique outlook on life, and I think it's reflected in my images. My images are lively, like a good band, and convey a sense of intimacy with the musicians and their music. It's a frozen moment of their lives, not a staged sterile slab.

My work has been published in countless magazines and newspapers worldwide. I've worked for many labels and bands producing album art and promotional materials.

My clients include Vagrant, Atlantic Records, Under the radar, Crawdaddy, Sub Pop, Beggars Banquet, New West, Amazing Grease, Matador,  DIW, Velocette, Tiger Style, Spin Art, Artist Direct, Barsuk, The Arena Rock Recording Company, Jackpine Social Club, Guitar World,  The San Francisco Noise Pop Festival, and many local San Francisco Bay Area bands.

I have work on permanent display in many venues in San Francisco, most notably the Bottom of the Hill nightclub where I'm one of the house photographers.  I also had an extensive exhibition of my photographs there in 2005.  My work has been used for events at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the De Young Museum, & 111 Minna Gallery.  I recently had a successful solo show at the Nelson Hancock Gallery in New York City .

A retrospective book of my work has recently been published by Chronicle Books.  Look for my book, Every Day is Saturday, featuring a foreword by John Doe, an introduction by Tim Scanlin and text by Christopher Slater, in bookstores now! The first edition of the book will come with a companion audio CD with 20 tracks of indie treats by the likes of Death Cab For Cutie, Grandaddy, The Wedding Present, Film School, the Court & Spark and more!

Call (415-559-3137) or email my manager Parker  for rates & booking, or drop me an email if you need more information or want to find out how I can help you with your photographic needs. I shoot in 35mm, 6x7cm & the Holga/Woca 120 formats.

Check the bottom of the page for praise about me and my book.

“There are so few photographers, especially in the world of "rock photography", that are worth more than one look.  Peter Ellenby qualifies as one of those few.”

John Doe, X & the Knitters

“This guy is the shit.”

John Vanderslice

"Every Day Is Saturday is an a/v-rich offering that makes standard coffee table fare pale in comparison."

Flavorpill

“The outcome of my experiences with Peter have been photos that are candid and alive with the feeling of having captured a true and unique, often exciting, moment in time.”

Lynn Perko, Imperial Teen

“The best things about Every Day is the way it shows what groups like Death Cab For Cutie, Queens Of The Stone Age, and Rilo Kiley looked like before everyone else was shooting them.”

The Onion

"Peter has that rare ability to make a band actually enjoy having their photos taken.  We've had our photos taken by Peter on many occasions and he has proven to be one of the only photographers that can make you forget he's got a camera in his hand."

Ben Gibbard, Death Cab For Cutie

"The list of bands Peter Ellenby has photographed since he began in 1994 reads like the graduation announcement for a whole class full of indie rock elites."

Pitchfork

“Peter Ellenby's images of indie rockers are perhaps some of the best rock photography of our generation. Using unusual equipment, such as plastic cameras and fish-eye lenses, Ellenby gives a distinct look to the voices that are defining the music that shapes our lives.”

Until Monday – Brooklyn

“At least one of your favorite bands is probably represented in the book, which includes Sonic Youth, Flaming Lips, Foo Fighters and heaps of other rockers. The 21-track CD makes Saturday especially gift-worthy.”

  USA Today

“I consider Peter to be one of the most gifted artists I’ve ever come across, from this century or otherwise. His photos exhibit that rarest of qualities: the ability to capture lightning in a bottle, time after time, and make it look totally effortless. That’s no small feat with a pint in your hand.”

Tim Scanlin, ActionSlacks

“Peter was a great photographer for AMC—he understood the music. He was one of us. We felt really comfortable during the sessions and loved the results.”

Mark Eitzel, American Music Club
